Alastair Chalmers is determined to become Guernseyβs first athletics gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games following his dramatic Paris Olympic experience. The 24-year-old hurdler suffered a heartbreaking fall in the semi-finals of the 400m hurdles, taking him out of contention just three-quarters of the way through the race.
Chalmers previously earned Commonwealth bronze for Guernsey at the Birmingham 2022 Games and is now channeling that experience into a new goal: clinching the top spot at the next Commonwealth Games. Glasgow is rumored to be a potential host city, as the Australian state of Victoria has stepped down from the hosting duties.
In an interview with BBC Radio Guernsey, Chalmers expressed his ambition: βI want to win the Commonwealth Games for Guernsey and I want to make the final in the Europeans.β He also has his sights set on the Los Angeles Olympics, sharing his belief that four more years will allow him to advance further: βSo much can happen in four years; youβve got to be healthy, fit, and in a good place.β
Reflecting on his Olympic experience, Chalmers remains positive despite the fall. Running in the outside lane, he was competing against elite runners, including eventual gold medallist Rai Benjamin. βIβm so proud of how I set it up,β Chalmers said. βIt was unfortunate that I hit it and fell over, but I got myself up and crossed the line.β
Chalmers has no regrets about his Olympic journey, viewing his semi-final appearance as a major victory in itself. βMy event is so technical, and as we saw in the final, two of the best guys in the world fell over. Sometimes a chance pays off and sometimes it doesnβt. Iβm just proud to have stood on that line and acknowledged how far Iβve come.β
